Desert experiences

The right desert evening, not just any safari

There is no single “desert safari”. There are quite different evenings, calm, active, dining-led, family-paced and overnight, and the value is in choosing the one that truly suits your group. We know the desert intimately, curate the format to you, and personally coordinate and oversee the whole evening on your behalf.

The idea

One word, several very different evenings

“Desert safari” is used for everything from a spirited afternoon of dune driving to a quiet dinner under the stars to an overnight in the sand. They are genuinely different experiences, and the wrong one for your group is a long drive to a disappointment.

So we start with what you actually want from the evening, stillness or energy, a meal or an activity, privacy or company, a couple of hours or a night, and shape the format around it. Nothing here is a fixed package; each is a starting point we design and run around you.

What we help you weigh

  • Calm and scenic, or active dune driving
  • Dining-led, family-paced, or a night under the stars
  • Shared company, a private vehicle, or a private table
  • Sunset timing, transfer distance and the drive home
  • Age, mobility and health considerations, planned for in advance
  • How we plan around the weather so the evening still lands

Where to begin

Six directions in the desert

Starting points rather than fixed packages. Each explains who it suits, so you begin with the right kind of evening rather than a generic booking.

Calm & scenic

Suits Those who want the dunes and the light, not the adrenaline

A gentler pace built around the softening evening light, quiet time in the sand and photography, with any driving kept easy rather than thrilling.

Talk through a calm evening, Calm & scenic

Active dunes

Suits Guests who actively want the drive and the movement

A more spirited format with dune driving and, where you want them, activities in the sand, for those who came for the energy rather than the stillness.

Talk through an active format, Active dunes

Considered dining

Suits An evening where the meal and setting matter most

A desert dinner under the open sky, with the emphasis on the table and the atmosphere rather than the activity that gets you there.

Talk through a dining evening, Considered dining

Family-paced

Suits Mixed ages, younger children or a grandparent along

A shorter, gentler shape with easier driving, shade and rest considered, and any age or health limits flagged before the day rather than on it.

Family journeys, Family-paced

Overnight

Suits Those who want the desert after the day-trippers leave

A stay through the quiet hours, the desert at dusk, the night sky and a still sunrise, with the comfort level chosen to match what you want and set out clearly in advance.

Talk through an overnight, Overnight

Romantic for two

Suits Couples wanting privacy and a sense of occasion

A quieter, more private direction for two, a private vehicle, a private table or a considered moment, arranged discreetly and without the crowd.

Why a specialist

The format makes the difference

A desert evening lives or dies on the format, not the brochure photo. Rather than sell one fixed safari to everyone, we read your group and choose between calm, active, dining-led, family-paced or overnight, then curate the setting and the timing to suit. We personally coordinate and oversee each stage and hold our partners to a standard we insist on, so even the well-known moments feel considered and your evening is comfortable, valuable and worth remembering.

One specialist team plans, coordinates and stands behind every part of your journey — from the first message to the final farewell. If anything needs solving, we solve it.

Formats we run

Behind the six directions above, these are the desert formats we most often run. All are directions rather than priced packages, each curated to your group and confirmed with you in writing.

  • Premium Desert Safari

A refined evening, dunes, sunset and dinner, where we lift the shared elements with our own touch so even the familiar moments feel considered.

  • Private Desert Safari

Your own vehicle and guide for the drive and the evening, so the pace and the timing follow your group rather than a shared schedule. Where the camp setting is shared, our touch keeps it feeling yours.

  • Luxury Desert Safari

A step up in comfort, setting and service, curated to your taste and described as a direction, with the exact detail confirmed with you before anything is booked.

  • Overnight Desert

A stay through the night, with comfort ranging from simple to substantial. We choose the level with you and are clear about exactly what it includes.

  • Family Desert

A shorter, gentler evening with easier driving and rest considered, and any age, height or health considerations planned for well in advance.

  • Romantic for Two

A private, discreet direction for couples, a private vehicle, a private table or a quiet moment, arranged away from the busier group formats.

  • Sunrise Hot Air Balloon

A first-light flight above the desert. It depends on the weather, so we plan it into your trip with alternatives ready and look after every detail, so when conditions are right the morning is effortless.

Desert questions, answered

How does ALVIA run a desert evening?

We design the evening around your group, then personally coordinate and oversee every stage, from the drive out to the dinner and the drive home, holding the operators we select to a standard we insist on. We know the desert formats inside out, choose the one that genuinely suits you, and one ALVIA team stays accountable for the result, so your time is protected and the evening feels comfortable, valuable and worth remembering.

What is the difference between a premium, private and luxury safari?

They describe directions, not fixed packages. A premium format lifts the shared elements of an evening; a private format gives you your own vehicle and guide so the pace follows your group; a luxury format is a step up in comfort and service. Even where the camp setting is shared, we bring our own touch so it feels considered, and we tell you precisely what to expect before you decide.

Will the sunrise hot air balloon fly?

The sunrise balloon depends on the weather, so we plan it into your trip with sensible alternatives ready and keep you informed at every step. We arrange it where you want it, set the timing around first light, and look after every detail so that when conditions are right, the morning is effortless.

Is the desert suitable for children, or during pregnancy?

It depends on the format. Active dune driving is not usually advised where there are health, back or pregnancy concerns, so we steer you to calmer, family-paced or dining-led evenings that suit better and shape the pace around your group. We flag any age or health considerations early and plan around them, and where health is a factor we suggest you take your own medical advice.

Can the desert evening be genuinely private?

Yes, and we are precise about it. A private safari means your own vehicle and guide; a private table means a reserved table within a camp; a fully private camp is exclusive to your group. We tell you exactly what each level gives you and arrange the one that fits, so privacy means what you expect it to mean.

When is the best time of day and year for the desert?

Most evenings are built around the late afternoon and sunset, when the light is best and the heat has eased; overnight adds the night sky and a still sunrise. Cooler months are generally more comfortable for time in the sand. We plan the timing around the light and the season, not a round number on the clock.

What happens if the weather changes our plan?

We plan for it. Where weather can reshape an evening, the balloon especially, we build in alternatives and keep you informed, and we set the change and cancellation terms out clearly in your written proposal before you commit. If anything needs solving on the day, we solve it.
